The Best Acne Treatment - August 31st, 2009

Acne is an inflammatory skin disorder that affects so many of us. A couple of days out of the month I have an acne breakout. One of the first things I learned about acne was that the exact causes are unknown. I’ve always thought that acne was caused by not keeping my face clean all of the time, or eating the wrong types of foods, like pizza and chocolate. Apparently, eating greasy foods doesn’t really have anything to do with acne. That’s a good thing because I love pizza, cheeseburgers, and chocolate!

Whenever I breakout with acne the first thing I do is clean my face with hot water and a mild liquid face cleaner. The next thing is I apply Proactiv. I love that stuff! It doesn’t burn, itch or sting when you apply it and I’ve noticed that the acne starts to dissipate pretty quickly. I love the astringent because it makes my skin feel healthy and shiny. I apply the lotion after the astringent and let it work it’s magic! So the next time you have acne and want to try a product that works, I suggest Proactiv.

Animal Testing & Skin Treatments - August 30th, 2009

They seem to test everything on mice first, and it honestly astounds me. Animal skin is not the same as human skin and will therefore not work the same way on human skin. I mean half the time I end up bathing my dogs with human shampoo. But you of course make sure to really rinse it off after, and if you see any sign of an allergic reaction or sensitivity, you stop using it immediately. But really, I mean they put out these tests and they say well this ingredient must work this way, because it works this way on rats, or they say well this makes this happen in terms of skin irritation, because we tested it on rabbit ears.

I feel bad for the animals being tested when the skin is not the same beast at all. For example, rabbit ear skin is actually exponentially more sensitive than human skin to just about everything. So when you test something and almost inevitably see a reaction, then they say it means that human skin will react and so it’s dangerous to use these ingredients. But then you actually use it on human skin and it doesn’t work that way, and this rabbit went through painful reactions for nothing. It doesn’t go the other way around, at least not as far as I’ve seen at this point. But I honestly don’t see the point of testing on something that’s not the same.
